One of the classic Portland, Oregon Christmas traditions is to stroll and marvel at the Christmas lights on Peacock Lane. It’s a tiny street in southeast Portland that turns into a Christmas wonderland, with nearly ever house on the street lit up for Christmas.
This is a popular spot during Christmastime, so I encourage you to come prepared. I wouldn’t recommend driving down the lane as you’ll not be able to take any photos, and the queues for cars looked horrendous. It’s busy as a pedestrian too, though; the lights turn on at 6, and we arrived about 20 minutes before, right after it got dark. Not all the lights were on, but many were, and it was busy. By 6:15 it was a madhouse, with screaming children (and adult) packing the sidewalks.
Don’t let that scare you off – it’s certainly well worth finding a parking spot and exploring. Bring a good camera, bundle up if it’s cold. Here’s a sneak preview of what’s on offer.
This sign welcomes you to Peacock Lane. I love the pretty peacock. Since 1929, wow!
You'd be forgiven for thinking that Peacock Lane was its own little Christmastown - from the middle of the street, all you can see for 360 degrees are Christmas lights. It's dreamy.
Peace on Earth.
Although it was a chilly night, this cute Frosty the Snowman didn't seem to mind - in fact, he was downright cheerful, as you'd expect from a snowman.
Green and red were definitely the en vogue colors of the night. Loved how the white Christmas tree in the front lawn reflects in the window here.
A lovely nativity scene pays its respects.
I loved this house because it had such a festive, almost whimsical feel.
Candy Cane, anyone?
Just so Santa has no trouble choosing where to park his sleigh...
Some of the house displays are quite elaborate!
Even Snoopy and Woodstock made an appearance!
The Peacock Lane Christmas lights start a 6PM on December 15th and run through the 31st. Parking is difficult in the area so spare extra time to get yourself settled. And if you’ll be here for a few days, don’t forget to check out some of our recommended Portland hotels and special deals.
